Roaring guitars, lots of crazy shit going on in the background. Top production. All in all, probably my favourite album by mr. Weller. Sadly, it lacks the recognition Wild Wood and Stanley Road (deservedly) got.. Well, at least it does not sound like Bloc Party.
James Brown - Give It Up Or Turnit A Loose (Remix) (In the Jungle Groove, 1986)
Hectic outbreak of the funk.
Sharon Tandy & Les Fleur de Lys - Hold On
Spanky Wilson & The Quantic Soul Orchestra - Waiting for Your Touch (I’m Thankful, 2006)
Noonday Underground - London (Self Assembly, 2000)
The Asteroid #4 - Here We Go (An Amazing Dream, 2006)
Cymande - Dove (Cymande, 1972)
At the other end of the funk spectrum.. I bet the Stone Roses must’ve played the shit out of this..
The Meters - People Say (Rejuvenation, 1974)
It is a funk album at heart, though the tracks are longer and thicker than on previous albums and it does manage to cross over into classic early seventies rock at some points (“It Aint No Use”, specifically. \m/). Good stuff, any way.
Paul Weller - (Can You Heal Us) Holy Man/War (Live Wood, 1994)
The last two minutes always get to me. He must’ve played the shit out of The Meters’ Rejuvenation.
James Booker - A Taste of Honey, Live at Jazz City Studios, 1978
Some more James Booker, cos he deserves all the mentions he can get. I remember having loads and loads of untagged mp3’s, each track was a little lottery ticket. There would be cases where he’d get into a prolonged rant, go ludicrous for a couple of minutes and get back to the exact note het left of at at the beginning of said rant. Other times he’d casually be virtuose, get completely caught up and, eventually, switch (like lightning) to a novelty song at ridiculous speed. Just cos he could. In rare cases though, you’d get the jackpot. The deepest, saddest, most brilliant music you’ll ever hear. Each chord a little piece of heaven, every touch the touch of a true genius.
